Positions through Contextualising

WEEK 1-2

Starting from my line of enquiry that has been shaped throughout the last brief

This project explores the relationship between Individual experience and erotic imagery.

How does an individual’s experience influence and propose new ways of understanding erotic imagery? And how can we use graphic design to illustrate new ways of seeing and understanding?

As I started to look out for references that are going to be helpful for me, I encountered with Sarah Lucas’ Au Naturel.

It is an exhibition that explores sexual ambiguity and the tension between the familiar and the absurd. By using a random of found objects and giving them a suggestive and humorous arrangement which intended to resemble body parts in a way that allows us to rethink how we view it.

The use of everyday objects carries association; they also present an individual experience. Lucas’ work gives a new meaning to the object and not only that but also presents a new way of seeing the human body.

And also the fact that erotic imagery is associated with body parts and often being presented by the male gaze. Lucas’ work reverses that male gaze with these food and object arrangements.

To situate my own position, I started to visual map the things I found to associate with different body parts, and as a woman, I want to present it as a female gaze and want to step away from the male gaze as much as possible so I only gather thoughts and views from my female friends.

Then, I tried to visualise and propose a new way to present and let the audience see and understand this context.

01

First, I made a pamphlet that has a tiny booklet attached to each page. It’s kind of a video collage but physical.

02

Next, I made a collage by folding a piece of paper.

03

For the third one, I made a cube that the viewer can play around and use their own imagination to create their own image.

04

And as for the last one, I used the folding technique to present the image in different ways.

Feedback

  • Think about objects; should they be visually related or conceptional related to body parts?
  • The colour picture would be much more convincing to the erotic context
  • Let others make their own pic and mix them?
  • Collage – let people explore as well, think about how it circulates; brochure?
  • Play with texture
  • Think about intention; should it be funny? Because it would be more accessible
  • Look at Charles and Ray Eames’ toys: House of Cards
  • Cube + Collage are the most interesting ones
