Projection I

WEEK 1-3

How can the act of recontextualisation of pornography/erotic archives be used to propose narratives on eroticism in Thai culture?

LINE OF ENQUIRY (draft 1)

Since the end of the last term, I questioned about how I could incorporate my culture into my work and how my culture shapes how I engage with sexual content so I decided to rewrite my enquiry into “How can the act of recontextualisation of pornography/erotic archives be used to propose narratives on eroticism in Thai culture?”

Starting by collecting archives from the Thai Rainbow Archives Project: a digitised collection of Thai gay, lesbian and transgender publications. I then reconstructed images by cutting and folding them to see if the narrative changes

From still images to moving images, I then tried to cut out a short sequence from famous pornography, printed them out and did a collage presenting the contrast between eroticism and Thai culture

Overall, my experiment seeks to subvert the narrative through image-making and embracing the contrast between eroticism and Thai culture

FEEDBACK

What’s working

  • Lots of experiments on image-making
  • Collaging / Folding

What’s not working?

  • Lack of narrative – my project intends to subvert narrative, but what narrative am I trying to tell?

Moving Forward

  • Identify the narrative and trying to convey in the series of image-making
