WEEK 4
After the feedback last week, I began to reflect and ask myself what narrative I want to communicate exactly?
During my research, I encountered interesting sayings about Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand and also where I am from
“…Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, known to the rest of the world as Bangkok, literally translates to ‘the great city of angels’. At first glance, its countless majestic monasteries, temples and palaces reaffirm the translation. But at nightfall, with the electrifying glow of neon lights, the city enlivens and reveals an ungodly look- however, angels abound in their glittery dresses and high heels…”
Ahana Roy, REPRESSED IDENTITIES: SEX WORK IN THAILAND
Like Roy said, and I deeply agreed. The contrast between culture and sex in Thailand not only appears in Tourism but also in a lot of things. So, back to the question at the beginning, the answer I gave myself would be I want to show “The duality of Thai culture toward sex”
I then listed out all the things I could think of:

But what medium or method am I going to use?
Last week, I experimented with a lot of image-making techniques, so I want to try to combine all of them to communicate the narrative I listed. Upon making, I realised that only images cannot convey what I wanted to tell so I decided to make a publication containing both text and visual forms.
How can the act of publishing/publication be used to propose narratives on the duality of Thai culture towards sex?
Line of enquiry (draft 2)

I then tried to combine all the techniques I’d been exploring last week and use them to tell each narrative.
As for the design choice, I used monochrome colour as the material I’ve gathered was mainly from old archives combined with stock images so to incorporate both visuals into the same direction, I used black and white. Another choice I made was the binding; as it is not yet finished, I want to be able to add more pages, so I used the fastener binding.

FEEDBACK
- To highlight the “Duality”, maybe use two colours / different typography / different papers / making use of the two sides of a spread
- There’s so much content piling up. Maybe break down each topic into different volumes?
- Identify my audience, as some of the pictures might want more context as to where they came from or the meaning
- Looking at “Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective Exhibition” might be useful for how he handles the image
