Projection II

WEEK 1-2

From projection I, the feedback I’ve got can be divided into 3 main topics

To develop further, I want to narrow my focus solely on issue 3 of my previous work, euphemism. I am interested in the relationship between sex and languages/words and in exploring the role of the designer as a translator.

Line of enquiry (Draft 1)

How can we use graphic design to challenge the notion of translating taboo and construct a way of learning the culture through languages?

My project aims to dissect sexual language in Thai culture, which is mainly in the form of euphemisms, break down layers of meaning and construction, and explore various forms of translation. I want to explore the possibilities and boundaries of language, both contextually and visually.

By creating a platform for people to engage and explore the meaning of euphemisms for sex-related words in Thai culture, which might be beyond their assumptions.

The project also considers exploring the possibilities of learning the culture through languages by using graphic communication design to challenge a way to construct those learning methods.

Purpose

  • To understand the culture; how Thais like to creatively create new words/slang to discuss taboo topics (sex / royal family / gossiping)
  • To inspire open conversation about sex and languages
  • To consider the fluidity of meaning
  • To (indirectly) criticise Thai sex education
