WEEK 3
Line of enquiry
How can we use graphic design to challenge the notion of translating taboo and construct a way of learning the culture through languages?
Method
Method of translating: both translation in Language; Thai to English and translation in medium
Medium
Explore different mediums to construct a way of learning euphemisms and inspire open conversation about sex, especially in a conservative culture and setting
Research
I started by collect all the euphemisms that are related to sex in Thai and translate to English

And then started to translate the words into a medium
01 Sticker as a medium
Conversation starter / make people want to learn or know more / form of expression
“Stickers can be a form of resistance and avenue of expression amid a lack of freedom of speech and abundance of censorship.”
Thailand’s Sticker Culture – By NewsOps, Documentary 2019
“For many Thai people, stickers are a way to anonymously address certain issues and ideas that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to express. It is also a way that individuals can express themselves in a world”

The visual was inspired by pop culture and signage. The use of bright colours was designed to catch attention and gain more engagement.
To develop further…
- Explore different mediums, think about something that can be circulated in public spaces and gain engagement e.g. pins, t-shirts
- Document the circulation
- Send it back to Thailand? to see the interaction
